21 Feb OBU RAP – A CRITICAL REVIEW OF KEY FACTORS OF MOTIVATION (Topic 6)
Lack of understanding of motivational theories is a general weak point of many students appearing for OBU Rap which renders this topic important from the viewpoint of the examiner. It must be noted that this topic is not entirely based on primary research and inapposite use of secondary information is always a source of penalization. Besides the lack of a strong grip on the theory, another mistake students mostly do is to not follow the highlighted objectives properly.
INFORMATION GATHERING AND REFERENCING
This is the most critical part of the entire project. Students must keep in mind that absence of any level of information will make the other useless. Hence, a combination of primary and secondary information will not only strengthen the topic but quickly single you out from the majority that will ignore either of the two.
Errors made in wrongly interpreting the topic becomes a huge disadvantage for the student. That being said, it is crucial to choose the right company for conducting the case study. As mentioned earlier, without the primary information, secondary information is of no use. Many companies do not permit you to their primary information. Therefore, foundation of the topic must be understood prior to information gathering. Once all the primary information is gathered, contrasting and comparing them for an ideal analysis and then moving on to the secondary information Is the right order.
Moreover, it is commonly observed that findings and data included in the research are not properly referenced by the student, which is an essential part when it comes to research papers.
UNDERSTANDING OF ACCOUNTANCY/BUSINESS MODELS
Students are suggested to not start their RAP without thoroughly choosing and understanding the model. The model of choice must be motivational and easily conveyed. Successful analysis of Model is only attainable after a strong understanding of it. A robust understanding of the model amplifies the efficacy of the analysis of the questionnaires and overall structuring of the questionnaire.
According to the examiner, students are advised to use and study more than one models/theories in their RAP. A few motivational theories include Maslow’s Theory of Motivation, Vroom expectancy theory and McGregor theory X and theory Y. This gives a better impression of the level of understanding of the student.
Once the student is confident about his choice of the model theories, the next thing is to be able to relate them to the company of choice and create the backbone of the research findings. While preparing the questionnaire and including questions in the paper itself, the questions must be checked and rechecked to remove any ambiguity. Correct structuring of the questions varies from one other. While some questions require addressing them at a more personal level, others may demand an explanation to a term uncommon to a layman or a person taking the survey. Careful observation of minute things may improve the RAP by heaps and bounds.
EVALUATION OF INFORMATION, ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSIONS
A strong structured building mainly depends on its strong pillars. In terms of RAP, these pillars are the primary and secondary information. A coherent and accurate gathering of information gives the student clear edge over other students who are not careful at the information gathering stage regardless of how good their analytical skills may be.
Keeping track of tips mentioned previously in this article, the information gathered by this point should make sense. It must be along the lines of the plan drafted by the student. Consider the primary and secondary information as all the information you need and have for the research. Students must not draw out any conclusions based on information outside of what they have collected and showed. Every conclusion in the RAP must be backed by an evidence from the data collected. Such approach significantly proves the examiner of the student’s abilities such as;
1. Correct gathering of information
2. Proper understanding of Information
3. Strong analytical skills
While analysis, two factors make the student’s work stand out.
1. proof or disproof the models
2. Use information from other sources (for e.g. the employees hand book)
Finally, as applicable to any other formal document, proper structuring and formatting is crucial to RAP as well. This includes arrangement of information in a way that it is coherent and unambiguous. Student must realize that he needs to convey an information he has extensively researched upon to someone who is only reading his research paper. This means every assertive statement must have a linked proof and every data must have a proper reference. It is advised that a student revises and goes through the Objective of the study time and again to not deviate from the path and provide information in an order that strengthens the objective rather than taking light away from it. When it comes to proper formatting of the study, some rules can not be ignored while some vary. Uniform line spacing and proper paragraphing are basics of formatting. These may seem minor to the student but greatly enhances the appeal of the project.
When it comes to presenting information and analysis, there are more than one ways. A more advised form to add questions is to highlight them one after another in an order that is coherent and brings the reader closer to the output/objective of the study. That is; starts from an introduction to body and finally, a conclusion. It is advised to include only relevant information from the pool of information gathered by the student. This means that any information that seem to be of little or no reference to the objective may be considered as irrelevant. A good output may only be possible once the input is correctly structured.
In summary, Key factors to gaining expertise over topic 6 include:
1. Proper construction of objective of the study
2. Apposite application of marketing needs within the company of choice
3. Research questions answered in an unambiguous precise manner
4.Coherence in the overall text of the RAP
5.Accurate financial analysis based on models
6.Strong, clear and logical conclusion fulfilling the aim and objective
